I'm lusting over an early 2000's Cadillac. No, it isn't a CTS. It's a big, float-y, fwd Cadillac Seville.

Kinja'd!!!

I know these are the definition of what was wrong with GM in the 2000's, but I can't help but love the thing. A Northstar V8 hooked up to the front wheels, big cushy seats, and nice, soft ride. I know the Northstar is known to have its problems, and it's an early 2000's GM product, but I want one. I just can't justify why.

There's a red one for sale with less than 130k for 3500. Its so clean too. Being sold in the bad side of town where the drug dealers would be, too.

O wonder what kind of mileage they get...

My grandfather (when he was alive) drove an earlier 2000s DeVille, for very, very long distances (like loops from Florida up to Connecticut, then to Mass, then down to NJ then back to Florida) no problem.

Nothing is wrong with you. The idea of a "sports luxury car" is great. But something can be said for a land yacht. Plus night vision on a Cadillac! Why don't they make that an option anymore???

A co-worker has a somewhat similar 2002 DeVille, 32v Northstar, FWD. It suits him - an older, fatter dude, he kinda looks like he's some ex-biker - and he likes it a lot. He has a muscle car history that says he can drive a big V8 FWD automatic Caddy if he wants to. Has a bit of a bad back, and the Caddy's seats are very nice. The only thing he complains about is city MPG, highway's pretty decent.

I've driven it, and it was about what I expected, except for one thing: a surprising lack of serious torque steer. The engine isn't exactly a Ferrari V8, but it's still a healthy amount of power to the drive wheels.

It's actually been pretty reliable for him over his 2 year period of ownership. Just wear and tear, really.

The Seville should be all of the above except a little tighter and stiffer. More leather recliner than overstuffed leather sofa. I thought it was a good looking car back then, and my opinion hasn't changed.

So I don't think there's anything wrong with you, really, especially if you want a highway DD.

Saw one over here in Germany a few weeks ago. It looked so wrong between all the hatchbacks, and that's a big compliment. The owner chose wisely. Who wants ordinary after all?

Kinja'd!!!

I have to admit, however, I wouldn't personally go for a Caddy like this one.

I just love the seats GM put in everything in the early 2000s. Hardly any bolstering, overstuffed, and all day long comfortable. I wouldn't expect much driving excitement from a big boat like this. A lack of torque steer is surprising really, considering how much power is pulling the front wheels.

Yea one thing GM did right back then is their seats on their more plush rides. Ten years later and they're still more comfortable than some seats in brand-new cars.

If you like it, DO IT. I was shopping for compact cars around 100K miles for about $6,000, and I found a Craigslist ad for one of these with 74K miles for $4,100. I couldn't resist the test drive, and after the first 30 seconds I was sold. For the price, no other car will make you feel as special and coddled. Granted, they blow head gaskets, but if you sock away some cash to cover the eventual head gasket failure (or find one that has already been fixed), you will love this car forever. Mine has 117,000 miles now, and I would make that same decision 100 times over.

Tracking in luxury, I love it. I saw a video where the power steering couldn't keep up with the inputs in the Seville, it was lock to lock for just a small S. I always wanted to take my Lincoln to the track just for giggles.

I've been thinking about used Cadillacs lately too, but haven't done much research on them. I bought an 07 Mustang GT 5 years ago and it still has under 23k miles on it now. It has an intake/tuner, Flowmaster catback, and MGW shifter, but is otherwise stock. I am thinking about selling it and getting the newest lowest mileage Caddy I could afford with whatever the Mustang sells for. I'm just ready to try something different. I was pricing all kinds of Miatas this morning too, 1990-2014. My wife thinks I'm crazy. I need a parental filter on my computer to block all automotive web sites.

I am guessing you have one of these old caddys then?

That is damn impressive mpg for a 4000 pound car with a v8 in the front of it.

How has the reliability been?

Kinja'd!!! ksmay71 > MontegoMan562 is a Capri RS Owner
04/09/2014 at 13:45

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, mine's a 2000 SLS. It has been really impressive, mileage-wise. As far as reliability, it's off and on. I've driven it from 74,000 miles to the current 117,000 miles having only done a tuneup (plugs, essentially. Coil packs are too expensive). I was going to do a transmission service but the head gasket went out (with exhaust gases in the coolant reservoir as evidence) at 99,000 miles. I used some crap-in-a-can, and it's still running strong 18,000 miles later. So we'll see how long it lasts. I just started putting tint in the windows because we live in AZ. Also, the crap-in-a-can plugged the heater core. So no heat. And the A/C stopped blowing cold. I would fix both the heat and the A/C if it weren't for the fact that the head gasket could go out any day, and the fact that the car was totaled at 98,000 miles. So it's not worth anything. But I still DD it, and love it.

And considering it's been totaled by a dent in the rear 3/4 panel that didn't hurt anything else, I get to answer the question "Would you drive a 2000 SLS to the grave if someone gave it to you for free?" The answer is yes. Very.
